The World Social Forum received like a bombshell the news about Municipal Councilor Marielle Franco’s execution, that took place in a Rio de Janeiro under military intervention. Our souls were shattered, just as was the body of one more brave woman, left-wing militant, black, feminist and “favelada” (“slumdog”), one more voice silenced.
The organizations of the Brazilian Collective of the WSF 2018 aim at publicly showing its deepest indignation, by joining its voice to the thousands of voices who protested, inside and outside Ondina’s campus, for Marielle and driver Anderson Gomes’s extirpated lives.
Black people had one of their rare formal representations in politics interrupted in the most brutal way. Marielle’s death is just one more belonging to the logics of black people’s genocide inside favelas, logics againts which she fought so hard.
The current moment is extremely serious, as the state of emergency we are living in Brazil and, particularly, in Rio de Janeiro, comes to blows in order to terrify us! The shots executing Marielle have hit us all. Her fight is already multiplying itself inside the Forum, and already echoes through the whole world. The organizations of the Brazilian Collective of the WSF 2018 join the Brazilian people’s fight, people who will not shut up and who will rise against impunity and fascism!
